Swimmers Ear Symptoms

Summer months is the period when the condition called Otitis Externa, otherwise known as swimmers ear, becomes prevalent. This condition is defined as an infection in the ear canal. The infection occurs because of the fungi or bacteria that have grown in the ear canal. People who are swimming regularly are prone to have the condition. Water may contain bacteria and, if this is the case, it may trigger the inflammation of the ear. That becomes more possible especially if the person stayed in the water for too long. The ear becomes more prone to infection when this happens. Although it is common during the summer months, it can also occur anytime. There are also some people who are more prone to getting this condition, especially those with eczema or seborrhea.

5 Most Common Symptoms of Swimmers Ear

You will know when you are suffering from the condition if you experience the following or some of the swimmers ear symptoms. The symptoms are:

1. Itching of the Ear Canal
When your ear canal started itching after you get out of the water, it can be an indication that the condition is beginning. It gets worse when the person started scratching the ear canal using any sharp objects. Scratching is only a reaction of the body to relieve the itchiness. However, it is not right to use sharp objects to scratch. That is because it can damage the skin, which may lead to infection. It must be remembered that the ear canal is surrounded by delicate thin skin that is bound to the bone. A little damage in the skin may lead to an infection.

2. Redness in the Outer Ear
This happens because of the bacteria that have started growing in the ear canal. If this is not treated right away, it may lead to swelling and infection.

3. Watery Discharge That is Color Green or Yellow
This discharge can be the effect of the bacteria that have grown in the ear canal. This can indicate that an infection has already started.

4. Experiencing Pain Whenever Doing Simple Movements
If you are suffering from swimmers ear and the condition has escalated, you might experience pain when you are talking. You might also feel the pain when chewing or touching your ear.

5. Muffled Hearing
This is one of the swimmers ear symptoms that are experienced temporarily. This happens because of the blockage present from the ear.

You should immediately call your doctor once you experience these symptoms. It is also recommended to call your doctor if you started experiencing ringing in your ears or dizziness. These are indications that the condition has worsened and needs immediate attention. If you started feeling severe pain, you can ask your doctor for some medication for relief. Swimmers ear can also be linked to other conditions like seborrheic dermatitis. This is a condition when rashes start appearing on the scalp near the ear. Contact your doctor immediately, so can you can be provided with a treatment to prevent it from getting worse.

It is important to be aware of your body since it is the first thing that can help tell you if there is something wrong with it. Be aware of these swimmers ear symptoms if you are always taking a swim.
