Are Sinus Infections Contagious

In order to get a better understanding of sinus infections, you must first know exactly what sinuses are. Your sinuses ate air passages that exist in back of your nose and are underneath your eyes. Most sinuses are classified as infections that stem from colds and allergies. The main question that exists involving sinus infections is their ability to be spread from one person to another. Are sinus infections really contagious?

What Causes A Sinus Infection?

A sinus infection begins when mucus builds up on the lining within your sinuses resulting in an infection. The symptoms that are common with sinus infections include headaches, eye pain and in some cases even tooth pain.

What Is A Sinus Infection With No Congestion?

There is more than one type of sinus infection. A sinus infection that does not result in congestion is also a common type. This type of infection results in only a small amount of mucus on the sinus lining. However, the cause of this infection is polyps that can block the air passage and cause swelling.

Viral Vs. Bacterial

The two main types of sinus infection are viral and bacterial. It is important to realize that all viruses are classified as contagious. This means that even though sinuses are not thought of as being contagious, they actually are in some cases. Viruses can be passed from one person to anther with ease and viral sinus infections can be passed from one person to another.

Bacterial Sinus Infections

Although viral sinus infections are classified as contagious, you can’t pass a bacterial sinus infection onto another person. Bacterial sinus infections can’t be transferred in the air and can’t be passed from one person to another. This means that if you have a bacterial sinus infection, you do not have to worry about spreading it to others.

How Can You Keep From Getting A Sinus Infection

Even though not all sinus infections are contagious, you should still take preventative measures to ensure that you are not spreading germs. Your immune system has a huge impact on if you are vulnerable to viral sinus infections, which means that you should look into making your immune system stronger and more resilient. It is recommended to eat foods with Vitamin A and try to drink plenty of water. This should keep you from being vulnerable to the spread of any viral sinus infections.
