Portal Hypertension Definition and Symptoms
Portal hypertension is high blood pressure in the portal vein system, which is the pancreas, stomach, intestines, and spleen. The most common cause of portal hypertension is cirrhosis of the liver. Symptoms include gastrointestinal bleeding (black stool), reduced levels of platelets in the blood, confusion, and an accumulation of fluid in the abdomen (ascites).
