Portal Hypertension Definition and Symptoms
Portal hypertension is when there is a increase in blood pressure within the system of veins called the portal venous system. Vessels in the liver become blocked due to liver damage and high blood pressure is the result. Symptoms include, gastrointestinal bleeding, an accumulation of fluid in the abdomen (ascites), confusion or forgetfulness, and reduced level of platelets in the blood.
