Neuromyelitis Optica Definition and Symptoms
Neuromyelitis optica is a central nervous system disorder that causes swelling and inflammation of the eye nerves and spinal cord. This disorder occurs when the immune system attacks its own cells, mainly the optic nerves, and sometimes the brain. The cause of this disorder is often unknown but may be related to a pre-existing autoimmune disorder. Symptoms may include vomiting before eye or spinal cord problems occur. Warning signs in children are confusion or seizures.
