This excludes carbuncle of breast (680.2), chronic cystic mastitis (610.1), neonatal infective mastitis (771.5), and thrombophlebitis of breast [Mondor’s disease] (451.89). This applies to abscess (acute) (chronic) (nonpuerperal) of: areola, breast, mammillary fistula, mastitis (acute) (subacute) (nonpuerperal): NOS, infective, retromammary, and submammary.
Mastitis Definition and Symptoms
Mastitis in an infection in the breast tissue and most commonly affects breast feeding mothers. A blocked milk duct is usually the cause. Symptoms include pain or burning while breast feeding, skin redness, a fever of 101 F or higher, breast tenderness, breasts that are warm to the touch, and a general feeling of sickness.
