Is Manic Depression Hereditary

Manic Depression is most commonly known as Bipolar Disorder. It describes a mood ailment which is indicative of strange behaviors such as: sleeplessness, delusion, depressive symptoms, and mania symptoms. There are several types of Bipolar disorder. Two of which are: Bipolar I and Bipolar II. Bipolar I is the most well-known type. It is indicative of mania and depressive symptoms. It looks like days in bed and imprudent reckless behaviors. Bipolar II may have more depressive symptoms than manic feelings of euphoria and indestructibility.

What Causes It?

The scientific community has been unable to pinpoint what exactly causes this condition. However, it is assumed to be correlated to genetic, hormonal and environmental factors. If you have a family member diagnosed with it and like in an urban area or are experiencing economic instability, you may be at risk for Manic Depression. People in less stable economic situations are more likely to experience this emotional upheaval. People experiencing neurochemical changing during menopause or other life stages may also experience these symptoms.

Is Manic Depression Hereditary?

It is not hereditary in the sense of there being a gene that transmits it. However, scientifically people who have members of their biological family who have mood disorders are more likely to have mood disorders. Men and women are affected at the same rate. However, the symptoms of depression are more likely for women and mania is more likely for men than women.

Details about Treatment Options

You cannot diagnose yourself with this condition. This psychological disorder has commonalities with many other disorders. It is imperative that you consult a doctor if you are exhibiting symptoms such as rage, decreased need for sleep, hyperactivity, excessive spending, and hyper sexuality or on the opposite spectrum, feelings of hopelessness, increased suicidality, and loss of interest in activities. It is imperative that you do not wait for it to simply go away or ignore symptoms.

This can lead to loss of life and major changes in relationships or employment. The doctor may prescribe either alone or in conjunction with mood stabilizers and anti-psychotics or perhaps a therapy or naturopathic regimen. People with Bipolar disorder who are treated can have long, happy and fulfilling lives. It is not a death sentence. The prognosis is great. See a physician as soon as possible. The earlier you start treatment the sooner, you can find a drug cocktail that works for you. Unfortunately, most of the medications for this disorder limit or prohibit alcohol usage and cause sexual problems.
