Men have to worry about their prostate when they reach the age of 30. While yearly exams are recommended, most men will opt not to have their prostate checked until much later in life. If you have been diagnosed with an enlarged prostate, there are a slew of medications that you may take to relieve the symptoms that follow an enlarged prostate; however, there are other alternatives.
Remedies
Medications do not always agree with a person, or they may be very expensive. We will comment on numerous home remedies for enlarged prostate glands that will relieve your symptoms and hopefully shrink your prostate.
Saw Palmetto
Many teas and herbal remedies include saw palmetto. This herb comes from palm trees and has been used throughout history to relieve problems that are urinary related. Daily ingestion of saw palmetto has been shown to help reduce the symptoms of BPH, but studies are inconclusive.
Taking saw palmetto will not produce any side effects and it is worth a try for anyone that wants to fight the frequent urination urges that an enlarged prostate will result in.
Pumpkin Seeds
Have you ever eaten pumpkin seeds before? These delicious seeds can be dried and eaten or baked and eaten. While delicious, pumpkin seeds have also shown to help those that have difficulty urinating. This is a symptom of BPH.
Used for hundreds of years to help those that have difficulty urination, pumpkin seeds have been shown to be a diuretic and will flush out the system while providing an immune system boost at the same time.
If you like, you can prepare pumpkin seeds in the following way:
1. Roast the seeds and add them to a healthy protein packed salad or bar
2. Eat them plain by removing the shell
3. Crush the seeds and place the grinds within a cup of tea
You will need to eat pumpkin seeds every day to see lasting results. Please note that this is only recommended when an enlarged prostate is causing you to have difficulty urinating. If you are already urinating frequently, eating pumpkin seeds will make the problem even worse.
Corn Silk
Corn is not just a tasty treat; it can also help you fight the symptoms of prostate enlargement. Corn silk, often discarded, comes from the husk of fresh corn. The Amish have been using this silk for centuries to help members of the community that have an enlarged prostate find some relief. The best part is that this remedy only needs to be taken 3 times per week.
What you do is:
1. Gather the silk from no less than 6 ears of corn
2. Place the silk in a pot of water, bring to a boil and let the water simmer for 10 minutes
3. Using a strainer, strain the silk and drink the leftover water
This is an age old remedy and has been shown to be very effective. While you may only be able to make this remedy during certain seasons of the year, it is a powerful solution that tackles the symptoms of prostate enlargement.
Change Your Diet
Home remedies for enlarged prostate are not always fun and exciting additions to your diet. In fact, you may need to change your entire diet to find true, long lasting results. Many of the foods that you eat probably aggravate your prostate causing it to inflame or continue to enlarge.
Instead, you are recommended to eat the following:
Salmon and most fish in general are high in omega-3 oils. These oils can also be found in flax seeds and have been shown to help reduce the growth of the prostate and fight cancer. Only 2 servings per week is recommended.
Soy-based foods are able to reduce the testosterone that causes prostate growth. While these foods are not always tasty, you can try to drink a glass of soy milk per day and results will follow.
You will find that diet is everything when it comes to prostate enlargement. Not adhering to a proper diet can cause your symptoms to get much worse.
Pygeum Bark
Typically found in supplement form, Pygeum Bark has been the center of numerous studies dating back more than 20 years. This bark was used by Native American as a way to relieve the symptoms associated with enlarged prostates and actually help reduce the chance of cancer cell growth within the prostate itself.
Pygeum Bark has been linked to the following:
1. A reduction of cancer cell growth specifically in the prostate.
2. The reduction of hyperplasia.
3. The prevention and treatment of prostate cancer.
4. The reduction in urinary incontinence caused by prostate enlargement.
The best part is that Pygeum Bark has no side effects when taken as directed. You can simply take the supplement in the morning and do not have to worry about headaches, bloating or any other side effects found in traditional medications.
