Home Remedies for Burning Mouth Syndrome

The burning mouth syndrome, as its name suggests, is a condition wherein there is an intense burning pain inside a person’s mouth, specifically on the lips and tongue. Scientifically known as oral galvanism or glossodynia, it is a common occurrence among middle aged people wherein they can experience this burning sensation for several days. As this condition causes an unbearable and acute pain, it becomes impossible to enjoy eating solid foods.

If burning mouth is an underlying medical issue’s symptom, no specific treatment is needed because it is the root of the problem that needs to be addressed. Treating the burning mouth syndrome that takes place with no specific reason can be a bit difficult. For cases like this, the main purpose of the treatment is for managing the symptoms. Here are a few burning mouth syndrome home remedies that you can try once you happen to experience this kind of health issue.

Remedies

Aloe Vera Gel
The problem can be cured by topically applying fresh aloe vera gel. Just cut open a fresh leaf of aloe very. Then, apply the gel that will ooze out of it on your tingling tongue. For the results to be faster, you might want to do the application a few times in one day. Putting the gel will give your tongue a nice and soothing feeling.

Ice
Ice is considered as among the most famous burning mouth syndrome home remedies. Just take one small cube of ice, put it in your mouth then suck this slowly. Through the cool sensation, your tongue will be numbed and you will no longer feel the painful burning sensation. Also, the water that melts from the ice will reduce the thirsty feeling.

Lavender Oil
Lavender oil’s antiseptic qualities have a unique healing effect on burning mouth. This can promote the circulation of blood and will then ensure a fast recovery from the issue. Put several drops of the oil on a cotton ball then apply this on your mouth and tongue. Make sure that you do this each night before you go to bed and you will surely see a good improvement on your condition soon enough.

Honey and Cold Mix
Prepare one glass of icy cold mix then add one tablespoon of honey. Drink it in small sips. This gives your body a calming effect, thus making you feel much better. Also, the combination can relieve you of the burning feeling on the tongue through improving the circulation of blood in the tongue. Aside from this, milk is also a great vitamin B12 source which can restore the nerve cells’ normal function that can provide sensation.

Water
A burning tongue can make you feel thirsty all the time, thus making you feel like drinking water every now and then. By drinking water, the thirsty feeling will subside and the burning intensity will decrease. You can start by drinking a minimum of 1 to 2 glasses of water. Drink 8 to 10 glasses during the day to control the dry feeling in the mouth.
