Erythritol Side Effects

Erythritol is a sugar alcohol which is produced from fruits like pears, watermelon, grapes and some products like beer and wine. This is commonly used to substitute sugar in some products such as beverages, yogurts, sugar free gum and candies. This can never cause its user tooth decay or even blood sugar.

Erythritol was used in the country of Japan since year 1989, while in year 1997 the Food Drug Administration of United States approved this as artificial sweetener. This is a frequent ingredient in diabetic’s food products, food which is low in carbohydrate and diet foods. To those who has calorie restricted diet or low calorie, this can be effective and highly recommended for use.

Since this is a naturally made product, it was recorded that only minimal side effects may occur. This commonly happens if tremendous amount is consumed, they might feel rumbling sound from intestinal tract and stomach, bloated, diarrhea or gassy. Laxative effect may occurs if a person frequently use this and if allergic reaction occur, they might experience itching and hives. Mostly children and person with syndrome of Irritable Bowel are the one that are at risk to Erythritol side effects. This is commonly treated using over the counter medication like Erythritol Diarrhea, but for some the side effects gradually disappears as the body adjusts.

One of the advantages of this product is that this can easily be absorb or digest by the body. Compared to other sugar substitute, this does not cause gastric or digestive side effects. It prevents the body from fungal infections and bacterial growth. It was noted that Erythritol is a non carcinogenic product, meaning it will not cause the user serious illness like cancer.

For patients who are presently suffering stomach disorders or Irritable Bowel Syndrome this product is not permitted or suggested for use. Erythritol is not seriously dangerous for the said patient, it just that this might cause them discomfort.

This can be use in different food as sweetener; this is very safe for consumption of patients suffering from diabetis since it does not affect the raise of insulin level. In some foods like cakes and soda this is a common ingredient, this product is not sweet like sugar. This is primary ingredients in some foods, there are no health risk reported. Instead this makes the product more fresh, makes the dough softer and controls crystallization.

According to FDA this is 100% safe as a sugar substitute. Since no allergic reactions were reported to them, instead various beneficial properties or benefits are noted the administration approves the Erythritol substance without the insertion of labels for warning.

In year 1999, the WHO/FAO Joint Expert Committee of Food Additives reviewed and gave Erythritol highest grade on food safety. A lot of nutritionist and doctors agreed that this is the safest, low calorie, healthiest artificial sweetener out of all the sugar alcohols. As stated earlier, this product is also recommended by dentist, since it was stated by the FDA that this is much safer the sugar. This reduces dental plaque acidity and does not contribute or add tooth decay that causes cavities.
