Difference Between Miracle Whip and Mayonnaise

Condiments often make the foods that we eat more appetizing and appealing. One of the most popular condiments is mayonnaise, but miracle whip is a great tasting alternative that many people love. Most individuals have very strong opinions about mayonnaise and miracle whip. They might both look the same and be in the same location at the grocery store, but these two condiments are quite different. In order to learn more about what separates one from the other, you must learn some background information about each.

What Is Mayonnaise?

Mayonnaise comes directly from Hellmann’s New York Deli, but it first originated years before after a victory in a Spanish exploration. The dressing was created by a chef and was referred to as Mayonnaise. However, once it made its way to the Hellman’s New York Deli in 1905 it finally gained worldwide acclaim. It became so popular that is then became mass marketed and circulated by Hellman’s. It is now one of the most popular condiments in existence. It has a distinct taste that you either adore or can’t stand. This distinct taste is what made it popular and what also brought about the invention of miracle whip.

What Is Miracle Whip?

This salad dressing was first created in 1933 by Kraft Foods. Charles Chapman is the individual that got credit for this invention and used regular mayonnaise as the main ingredient. However, mayonnaise is then blended with other dressings, spices and sugars to create a more mild taste that has a sweet undertone. It launched in 1933 at the Chicago World’s Fair and became incredibly popular. It was marketed as a salad dressing that could top almost anything.

What Makes Miracle Whip and Mayonnaise Different?

The main difference between mayonnaise and miracle whip is the recipe. Traditional mayonnaise has eggs, oil, lemon juice, vinegar and spices, but miracle whip is different. Miracle whip involves the use of traditional mayonnaise with other dressings, spices and sugars. Sugar is what separates mayonnaise and miracle whip. Traditional Hellman’s mayonnaise has an almost bitter taste, but miracle whip is sweet. Miracle whip has both sugar and high fructose corn syrup in its ingredients list. This means that mayonnaise might be a healthier option, but miracle whip has a more appealing sweet taste. People have very strong opinions about these two condiments, but personal preference is the main difference.
