Well, there is a wide variety of salt types out there, each one with its own unique individual characteristics. But whichever salt you are using, the goal is to get your food well-seasoned. To do that and to know what will be the best for you, you kind of need to know the differences between the types of salt, so here we go. In this article, we’ll take a look at sea salt and Himalayan salt.
Sea Salt
Sea salt in itself is just basically sodium chloride. Since it comes from the sea and all that, it can contain traces of minerals such as iron and zinc, which are pretty good for you. But this type of salt can also contain amounts of substances you certainly don’t want in your body. Pollution is growing by the minute and, since this type of salt comes from the sea (which can be slightly polluted) there might be traces of things such as lead in the salt.
There is a trick to see how pure the salt is, however. The trick is to just look at the salt and see how clear it is, according to its color. The darker the salt, the higher the amount of improper substances will be in it. This type of salt is made by evaporating sea water.
Sea salt isn’t very refined and as such, it is better to use before cooking so it can dissolve in the food. If you use this type of salt after cooking or on raw foods such as simple salads, you just might end up biting a chunk of salt that’ll give you a powerful salty flavor burst into your mouth.
Himalayan Salt
Let’s turn our focus to Himalayan salt. It is harvested in a popular mine in Pakistan and, since it was successful, it is now sold all over the world. The salt is pink due to small amounts of iron oxide in it, coming from the mine. It also contains amounts of things such as calcium, magnesium and iron that are incredibly good for your body. Furthermore, it contains less sodium than regular salt.
A lot of people claim this type of salt tastes better than sea salt, but a lot of people can’t tell the difference between the two on a blind taste test. As such, apart from the small nutritional differences (which in salt won’t have great effects on your body, unless you eat huge amounts of salt on a daily basis), the big difference between these two types of salt is the color.
