Difference Between Deep Tissue Massage and Swedish Massage

Massages can be beneficial for the physical and mental well-being of individuals and with the various types of massages available for you to choose from, it can be difficult to differentiate one from another. Two of the most commonly misunderstood massages are deep tissue massages and Swedish massages. If you are looking to relax your muscles and relieve tension but are unaware of the massage that you want, this guide will help you to distinguish the differences between a deep tissue massage and a Swedish massage.

What is a Swedish Massage?

This particular type of massage was developed in 1812 and it has 5 basic components that help to revitalize and relax the body. The 5 components are:

1. To use long and smooth strokes on the skin.
2. To gently knead the muscles.
3. Using friction in therapeutic methods to release tension.
4. Hacking, also known as tapping.
5. Giving the customers muscles a constant form of vibration.

With the use of these 5 basic principles, individuals will acquire an ample amount of relaxation and blood circulation at the conclusion of their massage. It is also commonly known that Swedish massage parlors will use drapes of fabric to cover up certain parts of your body during the session and as the masseuse moves from one area to the other, so does the fabric.

What is a Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massages focus on 3 specific areas of muscles, more specifically the neck, the back, and the connective tissues throughout the body. The reason that this type of massage is known as a deep tissue massage is because it is used to penetrate deep into the layers of the muscles in order to remove all of the strain from the targeted areas. The main difference between a Swedish massage and a deep tissue massage is that the latter is far more forceful in order to ensure that all of the problem areas are sufficiently targeted and relieved. Rather than focusing on the entirety of the body, like a Swedish massage does, a deep tissue massage is used on specific areas that are known to be high in stress and tension.

With the ability to take advantage of either a deep tissue or Swedish massage, there are many benefits that you will experience once your session is completed and your muscles have been taken care of.
