Difference Between Colonoscopy and Sigmoidoscopy

There is a difference between a colonoscopy and a sigmoidoscopy. Both of these are diagnostic testing that is done to evaluate the colon for signs of colorectal cancer and polyps. These life saving screenings can detect problems early on that will help to get lifesaving treatments.

Many people have a misconception about the type of testing and avoid it because they are embarrassed to have the testing done. It is imperative that a man over 50 has this type of testing done regularly. Colon cancer is a very serious disease that if not caught early will cause death.

The difference between the two procedures is that the colonoscopy investigates the entire colon while the sigmoidoscopy investigates only a portion of the colon is viewed. Each testing takes a different amount of time to perform and different equipment is used for the testing.

Colonoscopy

The colonoscopy is used to view the entire colon. This procedure takes about 30 minutes and is often done under sedation. Most patients do not have any memory of the event although they are not put out under general anesthesia.

The process will show the doctor if there are any polyps, tumors or ulcers in the colon. This can easily be the most accurate way to diagnose any cancer or other type of illness that affects the colon.

This type of procedure is quick but does require some recovery time because of the sedation that is used.

The Sigmoidoscopy

This procedure is typically done without sedation because it usually only take a few minutes and does not travel as far up the colon. The instrument is thinner and is somewhat less invasive. The total time for this procedure is around 10 minutes.

While most people do opt for some sort of medication to help them relax it is not mandatory and without the sedation there is less recovery time. This test does not venture to far into the colon so it is not as accurate as a complete colonoscopy is. It is often used in cases of internal hemorrhoids and other lower colon issues.

The Importance

While these tests are a bit different they are both very necessary. Each can help you to detect any issues early on while they are still very treatable. The testing is quick in both cases and should be part of any routine health care plan and can help you to maintain your health!
