Bulimia nervosa is a serious eating disorder that is characterized by a bingeing cycle and also compensatory behaviors. These behaviors include self-induced vomiting which is done to compensate or undo binge eating effects. It is also a condition that many celebrities are diagnosed with. These are celebrities have been brave to tell the whole world of that little, but significant fact about them. Some of these celebrities with bulimia nervosa are:
1. Paula Abdul
She is the celebrity who rose and became famous because of her being a Los Angeles cheerleader. From being a famous cheerleader, Abdul took the step and became recognized as a popular choreographer. After that, she began releasing her own music. In 2009, she returned to be a judge in American Idol.
The world learned about her secret of having bulimia when she was interviewed in Prime Time Live in 1995. She stated then that she has had the disorder for 17 years. She underwent an extensive therapy to address her problem at a psychiatric clinic in Oklahoma. Abdul also stated that she developed the disorder because of her perfectionism along with the constant competition she participated in as a dancer.
2. Russell Brand
Russell Brand became recognized in the US showbiz scene after being in the film entitled Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which was released in 2008. He revealed that he began binge-eating and also vomiting when he was just 11. He also revealed that he found the habit euphoric. The disorder was treated and only returned upon staying in the rehab because of alcohol and heroin. The good news is he stayed clean since 2003. Brand made it his goal to attend AA meetings regularly to keep his clean case that way.
3. Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay is just one of the celebrities with bulimia nervosa, one who has already accomplished so many things even at an early age. From a child fashion model, being casted in commercials to being in star roles, these were the steps she took before becoming the star she is now known today. It was only in 2009 when she admitted to the world that she is suffering from the disorder. Fortunately for her, there were lots of people who helped and intervened in preventing the disorder from worsening. She had been to rehab for several times.
4. Melanie C
Melanie C is known as Sporty Spice of the Spice Girls. Her fame began after their song Wannabe was released. She was just in her twenties then. It was also the time when she started suffering from bulimia, which she blamed happened because of her age that time. Her rise to fame contributed to the development of the disorder as well since she started being conscious of her size. She began seeking help to treat her disorder while staying in London. But, she declined the use of counseling and antidepressants and instead turned to alternative help, which includes massage, aromatherapy and acupuncture.
These celebrities with bulimia nervosa may have experienced a time of struggling because of the disorder. But, most of them turned to something that in result has helped and treated them. And most of them have also made another chapter in their lives without the disorder. This only shows that other people with bulimia can also live a life without it if they want.
