What Causes Hair Breakage

Hair breakage is very common these days. Hair breakage is not just a phenomenon associated with women but men too face the problem throughout their lives. Hair breakage can happen to women and men of all ages.

Causes for Hair Breakage

The primary reason or cause for hair breakage is unhealthy hair. Like any other organ or part of the body, hair requires nutrition and has to be cared for. Well maintained, well attended to and cared for hair which is nutritious and healthy would not be vulnerable to breakage. However, if one is on a poor diet, doesn’t care for the hair and uses products that are unhealthy for the head, hair or scalp then hair breakage would be very common and frequent.

One common cause for hair breakage is overstretching the hair. When you stretch the hair, the follicles get stressed. Even if some follicles are able to hold onto the hair, the hair specks can break midway. Another very common cause for hair breakage is styling. Many people, especially women, do not style their hair in a holistic manner. Due to time unavailability, most women style their hair when it is still wet or moist. This is a big cause for hair breakage. Hair needs to be dry before it can be styled. Besides, whenever cosmetic products are used which are not very organic or harmless for the hair, the quality of each speck of hair deteriorates and thus becomes prone to breakage.

Malnutrition or improper diets make hair breakage a more frequent phenomenon. Eating junk foods, not having enough vitamins and minerals in the diets are common these days. When your body is low on protein and there is a deficiency of vitamin B 12, iron and zinc, hair breakage would be prevalent. When you run low on vitamin K and vitamin D, hair breakage can be facilitated.

There are many other causes of hair breakage. Overexposure to sunlight and its UV rays would quicken the process of hair breakage. Using shampoos that contain too much sulfate or cosmetic products that use toxins and chemicals which aren’t healthy can cause hair breakage. Using colors that are harmful or using styling techniques that are unhealthy such as heating up your hair to a great extent can all contribute to hair breakage. Using poor combs, clips and not moisturizing your hair would also lead to breakage.

Taking proper care of your hair can prevent all forms of breakage.
