What causes bloody noses can have several answers. Before getting into the conditions or causes of bloody noses, one has to differentiate between two types of bloody noses.
Common Types of Bloody Noses
The most common type of bloody noses is when blood oozes out, drips out or there is only a little blood inside the nose originating from the internal anterior surfaces of the nose. The other type of bloody noses, which is also a rare condition, is when the blood oozes out right from the posterior section of the nose. In this case, blood doesn’t come out from anywhere inside the surfaces of the nose that you can feel with your fingers. The first condition is known as anterior nosebleeds and the second, rarer condition is known as posterior nosebleeds.
Causes of Bloody Nosees
There can be dozens of causes of bloody noses. Before delving into them, it has to be ascertained if there is any medication that you take which has the potential of causing nosebleeds as a side effects. Many decongestants, medication for heart conditions and for sinusitis or other health ailments can cause bloody noses. Some of the medicines can cause minor bleeding and some can lead to very serious cases of nosebleeds.
If you are not under any medication that might cause bloody noses, then it can be caused by numerous physical factors. A recent or very old injury may be the cause. In most cases of injury, a vein or veins in the nose may have been damaged and that can cause bloody noses. Scarred tissues or surfaces inside the nose can also be the cause. Harmless nose picking, blowing your nose too hard, staying in a very dry condition for a long time, exploring higher altitudes where there is a drop in air pressure, being at a place where there is very little humidity or no humidity and being affected with common cold or influenza are all different causes of bloody noses!
Additional Health Conditions
Allergies, hay fever, illegal drug use, deformity of the nose, liver ailments, haemophilia which is a type of bleeding disorder and leukemia can also be the causes of bloody noses. From apparently a simple condition to a serious health condition, bloody noses can be caused by one or more factors or conditions.
A onetime bloody nose is not a cause for concern but if you happen to have it twice or a few times in quick succession then you must consult your general practitioner and get diagnosed.
