Bunion vs Gout

Problems in the feet can be very troublesome. We need our feet to be able to balance and walk normally, any issues can disrupt everyday life. Bunions and Gout are two very common reasons for pain in the feet, but they are two completely different things. Read more to understand what each is and how they are different from each other.

What Is Bunion?

A bunion is a bony mass that develops on the joint of the big toe. They are caused when the big toe pushes against the toe next to, which forces the big toe to compensate and become larger. Bunions are commonly caused by wearing shoes that are too tight or narrow, this can also make existing bunions become worse.

Symptoms
Common signs of a bunion is a bulging bump on the big toe, red and sore skin on this bump, pain in the foot, calluses, and swelling around the big toe. If you are experiencing any of these bunion symptoms you should see a doctor to find out what your options of treatments are.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a medical disorder that causes severe attacks of pain in the joints, most commonly the joint of the big toe. It is a complex form of arthritis that can be aggravated by eating certain foods. It can be very painful and cause issues with walking.

Symptoms
Inflammation in the joints that cause tenderness and pain, is the most common symptom of gout. Other symptoms that may be experienced with gout is sudden and intense joint pain, a limited range of motion in the joint, and a discomfort that lingers for up to a few weeks.

Comparison

The largest difference between a bunion and gout is the physical appearance of the condition. Bunions for a large, bony mass to form on the side of the big toe, which is very easy to see. Gout causes no physical symptoms, except for the possible redness developing around the joint that is affected. Another big difference is that gout can happen in any joint, while bunions only occur in the big toe.
