Pregnancy is a natural occurrence being experienced by women. It is something that most women wait to experience as well. And, when it finally happens, they do everything to get the developing baby supplied with the right nutrition to grow and come to a full term. Of course, it also lets women feel happiness that can only be felt because of knowing that they are expecting a baby. So, you feel shocked when you are told that there really is no baby to expect. Yes, it may seem impossible to think that “pregnant that is not really pregnancy” can occur. This condition is termed as blighted ovum.
It is a pregnancy loss which happens during the early stage. Blighted ovum commonly occurs after the conception, which is the time when the ovum or fertilized egg implants itself in the uterus, your womb. However, even though this process took place, no baby was developed.
For the blighted ovum symptoms, there really cannot be mentioned as one. At most, you will feel like you are truly pregnant and it is normally progressing. Your body is also sending the same pregnancy signals. Even with the blighted ovum already present, you are still experiencing your breasts feeling much tender. The only time when you will know that something is wrong is during the first appointment for an ultrasound scan. This time, once your womb is seen, instead of the pregnancy containing an embryo, it is empty.
This can be quite a shock to you. It is not known why a blighted ovum happens. The only reason might be that when the egg is fertilized by the sperm, it resulted in some cells developing into the membranes and placenta. And, some of the cells accumulated into the embryo. There will be times when the developed cells becoming the embryo would fail. It may be because of either too few or too many chromosomes when fertilization occurs. At such case, the placenta as well as membranes still continues to develop. The pregnancy still continues as well.
When this happens, the body has no way of recognizing that the sac does not contain a baby. That is because pregnancy hormones are continued to be produced. It is also the reason why you feel like you are pregnant. If there are any blighted ovum symptoms that can be stated here, it would be similar to pregnancy symptoms. These include nausea, bloating and tender breasts. Aside from these, there are no abnormal symptoms being experienced.
Also, if there are, it can be considered as signs, which can be identified during the ultrasound scan. The sign would be the measurement of the pregnancy, which is determined during the scan. This sign is being measured more than 1inch or 25mm and still doesn’t contain an embryo. This time, the sonographer can decide to make the diagnosis. The diagnosis will be confirmed after the first scan when it is seen in the second scan that the pregnancy sac does not contain an embryo.
Thinking that you will have a baby soon really can make you happy. However, with occurrences like blighted ovum, it can really disappoint you. It is a good thing that there are machines that can help diagnose such condition at the early stage of pregnancy.
