Best Ways of Leaving a Codependent Relationship

Relationships come in all shapes and sizes. In a way, a relationship tends to defy logic. In any relationship are two separate and imperfect individuals, working together as one towards a shared goal while maintaining some level of emotional, psychological, and physical independence.

Sometimes, a relationship can be unhealthy for those involved. More often then not, this occurs through a codependent relationship. Lets take a few moments to define exactly what a codependent relationship is. In addition, we will review some of the reasons why it is best for you to leave one of these relationships if you believe you are in one.

Definition of a Codependent Relationship

There are many things that go into defining a codependent relationship. Many experts in the field of relationship and social science believe that a codependent relationship is when your dependent on another for approval. In addition, a codependent relationship is when you derive your self-worth and identity from that person. Now this alone is not bad. However, it can result in a kind of relationship that is hurtful and destructive.

A common characteristic of codependent relationships is when your life is centered around making the other person happy. This extends to the point that you will make your own life unhappy as a result. In addition, these kinds of relationships include an unhealthy level of clinginess, where one person does not feel like they have self-sufficiency or autonomy outside the relationship.

Why Should I leave a Codependent Relationship?

As was hinted about above, a codependent relationship requires another person for all feelings of self worth and esteem. Depending on who is on the receiving end, it is very easy to manipulate and be abused while in this kind of relationship. When one of two partners is unwilling to stand up for themselves for fear of a loss in the relationship, then power is given to the other person. This power can be used to abuse and eventually lose the other person.

Leaving a codependent relationship may be the most challenging thing you have ever done. You are leaving the one person who you feel can give you self worth and meaning. However, based on what the other person does, you can be seriously hurt. As a result, leaving a codependent relationship is a good move because you will be significantly healthier in the short and long term.
