Bananas vs Plantains

You might be wondering around the supermarket today, and see two kinds of “bananas” that look exactly the same, but labeled as plantain and banana. However, you don’t know the difference between the two. You might not even bother which one to pick, so you simply bought any between the two. But the thing is that plantains and bananas are not the same. They do look alike, but they have differences that you should be aware of, so you know which one is more suitable for your daily diet.

What Are Plantains?

Plantains are cousins of bananas (which explained their resemblance), but are derived from a different plant species. Plantains are highly rich in starch and poor in sugar content. And it is only eaten after it was cooked. It is usually considered as a vegetable rather than a fruit. It is the main staple of India and Caribbean dishes. It is usually cooked by baking, steaming or frying. It is popularly known as the potatoes of the Caribbean. The texture of this food remains firm even after it was cooked. The main reason why plantains are not eaten raw is because its high starch content, low moisture, and firm texture makes it unpalatable or not easily digested by the stomach.

What Are Bananas?

Bananas are fruits rich in sugar and moisture. Bananas are eaten fresh and ripe, and easily digested even by babies. It is added in many dishes especially in tropical cuisines. The sizes of bananas are usually smaller than plantains with a thinner skin. It is a great source of potassium that people under diet meals eat to easily build up muscle mass, repair muscle tissue, and increase strength that reduces soreness after workout. It contains antioxidant properties that help flush off harmful toxins and free radicals from the body.

Similarities and Difference of Bananas and Plantains

Both bananas and plantains are rich in carbohydrates, fiber, magnesium, phosphorus, and Vitamin A and C. However, plantains contain more carbohydrates than bananas. Both are highly nutritious but give off different health benefits. Both are eaten in diverse meals that boost the taste and finest of the cuisine, but bananas have more varied use than plantains. Plantains are usually used as side dishes and staple food. While bananas are commonly used for desserts, beverages, and as a main ingredient as well. Bananas are eaten raw or cooked, while plantains are eaten only when cooked. Plantains are longer and have thicker skin than bananas.

Knowing the difference between the two will give enough knowledge of which one is more suitable for your meal and your diet. You might be under low carb diet, but you mistaken a plantain from a banana. Or you should be wary of sugar but bought a banana instead of a plantain. The essential thing about these foods is that they will provide the necessary health benefits that the body needs.
