ALS Definition and Symptoms
ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control muscle movement. This disease causes muscle weakness and greatly impacts physical functions. Some of the most common causes of ALS are chemical imbalances, abnormal immune response, and gene mutation. Symptoms include weakness in the legs, feet, or ankles, slurring of speech, muscle cramps, difficulty holding the head up, difficulty walking, hand weakness, trouble swallowing, and muscle twitches.
