Horseradish Health Benefits

Horseradish is a cousin of mustard. Whether it is in an herbal preparation or on a roast beef sandwich, it increases facial circulation, clears sinuses and promotes expulsion of mucus from the upper respiratory passages.

Horseradish has been used as a kind of medicine for many centuries now. It is very useful for sinus infections since it encourages and lets your body get rid of mucus. A sinus infection might begin with thick mucus accumulation in the sinuses that lays out the welcome mat for bacteria. Stagnant mucus causes a painful infection and is the ideal ground breeding for bacteria to multiply. But with horseradish, it helps thin and move out thicker, older mucus accumulations. If you’re prone to developing sinus infections, you can use horseradish the moment you feel a cold coming to avoid mucus from accumulating in your sinus cavities.

There are numerous herbalists who recommend horseradish for influenza, common colds and even lung congestion. It also has a mild natural antibiotic effect and stimulates urine production. If you have urinary infection, treating it with horseradish is great. Hence, if you experience sinus, chronic urinary or other infections, you must know that this is considered safe for long term use. Minimally, it is also used to alleviate nerve irritation and the pain caused by arthritis. It is also used for the treatment of infected wounds. There are few effects of using horseradish such as rash or irritation and it may redden your skin as well.

It is low in fat and calories, thus it contains a great amount of vitamins, dietary fibers, antioxidants as well as minerals. Certain active principles in it have been found to be nerve soothing, anti-inflammatory and offer diuretic effects. The root of horseradish contains lots of volatile phytochemical compounds that provide its much famed pungent character. It also has a good amount of vitamin C, which is an excellent water soluble antioxidant. Vitamin C present in horseradish helps ease viral infections by boosting one’s immunity. Moreover, it also removes harmful and risky free radicals from your body and protects it from inflammation, cancers, infections and many more.

The root spice of horseradish has some of the essential minerals in moderation such as manganese, potassium, sodium, copper, iron, magnesium and zinc. The mineral iron is a significant co-factor for cytochrome-oxidase during cellular metabolism. In addition, it is also important for the red blood cell production in your bone marrow. Being an essential component of body and cell fluids, potassium helps in controlling blood pressure and heart rate while manganese is used by the body as a co-factor as well. Thus, it also has small amounts of vital vitamins such as pantothenic acid, niacin, riboflavin, vitamin B-6 and folate.

There are different advantages and benefits that horseradish offers to many people who suffer from any type of disease or illness. These essential health benefits are really helpful in boosting one’s overall health. Keeping your health at its best protects you from various illnesses and diseases.
