Both Psoriasis and Seborrheic Dermatitis are skin diseases that can cause great discomfort. In both cases you will develop scales although they will be different in color and will be different to get rid of. Diagnosing these skin diseases can be difficult in the early stages when they look so similar.
Both these skin diseases will start out as redness of the skin. They will both be itchy but the location will be different. Once the scales erupt that is also a tell tale sign of what you are dealing with and what the best treatment options are.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is thought to be a genetic disorder in other words if one or more parent has psoriasis there is a very good chance that you will too. Psoriasis is not contagious. It is marked by silvery scales that can appear on any part of the body but usually appear on the hands, elbows, neck, knees and in some cases the face. It can also effect the nails and scalp.
It is not a dangerous disease but can effect the quality of life of many sufferers. There are four identified types of this disease. In many cases the symptoms are mild for years than can flair up and make the sufferer very uncomfortable.
The scales that are associated with psoriasis are not easily removed. If they are picked at they will bleed and may cause infection. There are several treatment options for people that suffer from this disease that can help to control flair ups but at this point there is no cure for this skin disease.
Seborrheic Dermatitis
Seborrheic Dermatitis has no known cause although it is associated with oily or dirty skin. In its mildest forms it can be as common as dandruff in it more serious forms yellow crusty scales can develop. Usually the scaly type forms around wherever there are sweat glands.
The scales can be easily scrubbed away without damage to the skin. There are some health conditions that are also associated with this skin disorder like Parkinsons disease. Treatment is usually simple and effective.
A dermatologist may take a skin sample of the scales to confirm that it is not psoriasis which would require different courses of treatment. In its mildest form dandruff shampoo used on the body can clear it up. If it is a more severe case than a dermatologist may prescribe something strong.
In most cases good personal hygiene practices and some medicated soaps can quickly clear up this disorder.
