A huge majority of pregnant women would undergo an ultrasound at least once through the trimesters. Some women may opt for more than one ultrasound. Earlier, there was only one type of ultrasound which is now referred to as 2D ultrasound. Today, there many other types of ultrasound such as 3D and 4D which are both advanced and a ton of fun.
There is obviously a difference between 3D and 4D ultrasound but before looking at that, it is necessary to highlight what 2D ultrasound is.
2D Ultrasound Explained
As the name suggests, 2D ultrasound is a two dimensional image that is a result of the ultrasound scanning procedure conducted on a pregnant woman. This two dimensional image is usually black and white and the image is grainy. 2D ultrasound is very accurate and has been successfully used across the world for a long time. 2D ultrasound can show if there are any problems with the baby’s heart or some of the other organs. Apart from that, 2D ultrasound doesn’t really offer any further insight.
3D vs 4D Ultrasounds
The primary difference between 3D and 4D ultrasound is that the former is a three dimensional image while the latter is a four dimensional experience. A three dimensional image is easy to understand and imagine. The baby’s image would be life like and it would not be confined to black and white grainy images. In 3D ultrasound, numerous images are taken from the scan and they are run through a process to produce the three dimensional image. 3D ultrasound can highlight even minor elements and attributes of the baby while in the womb. Many facial features, any minor defects or yet to grow bodily parts can be easily viewed in a 3D ultrasound image.
A 4D ultrasound is an advanced version of a 3D ultrasound in which the scanned image is actually a video. 3D images are recorded and displayed in real time to make a video which shows the baby moving and every other movement that is happening inside the womb of the would be mother.
There isn’t much difference between 3D and 4D ultrasound in regards to its utility or application but the latter can be much more fun because of the movements being recorded and shown.
As it would be obvious, there is a price difference between 3D and 4D ultrasound with the latter being slightly more expensive than the former.
