In a world that is growingly concerned about health issues, we need to keep on looking after our hygiene, and that includes our horal hygiene. Usually, we just floss, wash our teeth with toothpaste and that’s about it, but it doesn’t really cut it since there are millions of sweeteners out that ready to destroy our teeth.
When the oral situation is bad, however, we do end up going to see a professional while looking for help. Most of the time, people go to a dentist because this is the most common type of professional that cakes care of your mouth.
Dentists usually work in private or in group offices, and they treat less serious conditions while taking care of you general oral health. They will guide you and help you make the most out of every product and technique so that you hopefully will not have to pay a visit to an oral surgeon. The limit dentists will usually go is to tooth extractions, and from that point forward (more complex procedures) they usually refer to an oral surgeon.
On the other hand, an oral surgeon is a professional that performs a wide variety or surgeries around the mouth, jaw and sometimes even the face. These professionals are well trained in removing oral tumors, cysts and extracting damaged teeth, as well as repairing broken bones in the mouth area.
As far as training goes, dentists complete four years in a dental school so that they can get their license to start practicing. Oral surgeons, however, need a little bit more than this. Oral surgeons need specialized training after they are finished with dental school, and before qualifying as oral surgeons they need to make hospital residency programs. It might be a little bit tough to be an oral surgeon, but the job responsibilities justify thee toughness..
The general rule is that the more complicated the procedure, the more likely it is for a dentist to refer to an oral surgeon to take care of the subject. This is because the oral surgeon has a lot more training than the dentist, and has the skills to perform complex procedures to a level that dentists are not able to.
But this doesn’t mean you have to start looking at dentists as if they weren’t good enough – they are. They did go through dental school and they did manage to get a license to be able to take care of your dental hygiene. Oral surgeons just went the extra mile and had some more training so that they can perform complex procedures. Although they aren’t as widespread as dentists out there, they are also incredibly necessary due to the severity of some cases that come up to them.
