Pros and Cons of Donating Plasma

Donating plasma becomes more talked about during times of natural disasters and need. However, there is always a need for plasma donations. A plasma donation involves giving blood and having the plasma drawn out before the blood is then put back into the body. This procedure often takes about an hour to complete and has little pain associated with it. Donating plasma has several pros and cons that you should know about before you begin donating.

Pros: Make Quick Cash

Individuals that donate plasma are often reimbursed with cash from plasma centers. It is possible to donate your plasma about 2 times each week, which can add up to about $200.00 each month. This is not a huge amount of money, but many college students and others in need of quick cash find that plasma donations can be lucrative. You can make money while helping others.

Pros: Lifesaving Potential

Donating plasma is a great way to make a difference in the life of someone with a life threatening medical condition. Plasma is vital to life and you would be making a big difference by donating your own plasma to those most in need.

Although giving aid to others and making fast cash are great benefits of plasma donations, there are some drawbacks that you should be aware of.

Cons: Daunting Experience

Not everyone can donate plasma. This means that you have to undergo daunting experience each time that you wish to donate. You are required to drink about two glasses of water right before plasma donation to ensure that you are fully hydrated. The first donation can take a long period of time and you will be forced to answer very personal questions about your medical and sexual history. You must answer even the most personal questions openly and honestly.

Cons: Physical Wear

The reason that there is a limit to the amount of plasma that you can donate, is due to the fact that it can take a toll on your body. Sometimes the veins can become collapsed if you are donating plasma on a regular basis. You also have to remain at the plasma donation center until you are cleared and seen as physically stable.

Before you go to the nearest plasma center for some quick cash, you should be aware of the pros and cons associated with donating plasma. It is not for everyone, but it can make a difference.
