Difference Between Benefiber and Metamucil

If you need to regulate the sugars in your body or keep hunger in check, you probably need to add a little fiber to your diet. Sometimes eating more fiber isn’t enough and you just might need a fiber supplement. The two main fiber supplements in the market are basically Metamucil and Benefiber.

In Need of a Fiber Supplement?

Metamucil is a fiber supplement that doesn’t dissolve in water, and when you add Metamucil to water, you create a thick mixture because it absorbs the water. On the other hand, Benefiber is a fiber supplement that does dissolve in water, and when you mix it in the water, the water remains clear.

Although they are both great when it comes to fiber supplements, they do have their differences. Metamucil is great to relieve constipation and to absorb cholesterol, pretty much in the same way that it absorbs water. But the biggest advantage that Metamucil has over the others within the market is that since it forms a thick paste, it will clean up your intestines as it goes down your digestive system. Furthermore, it’ll control the amount of sugar in your blood, making you a little healthier.

Nevertheless, Benefiber has one special advantage over any other kind of fiber in the market. While fibers like Metamucil are amazing to keep you healthy and to supplement your body with fiber, you can not really take them while on medication since the medication will most likely be absorbed by Metamucil and be cleaned up as well. With Benefiber this doesn’t happen at all, as seen from the example above, it doesn’t absorb water but it dissolves in it, meaning that it would not absorb your medication.

So if you have to take medication and also require a fiber supplement, Benefiber is the way to go for you that is for sure. Otherwise, you would be making the effects of your medication completely null by removing it from your body because of the fiber supplement. Nevertheless, if you don’t have to take medication, Benefiber is also a good choice that won’t let you down.

Get Your Nutrition

But if you really want to remain healthy you won’t get there with fiber supplements. Sure, they will help you get healthier but they can’t do the trick by themselves. You need to have a balanced diet with fruit and vegetables involved, as well as a lot of liquids and a good diversity of foods ingested. Fiber supplements are only supposed to be used as supplements, and if you really need to use them, it would be better for you to take both Metamucil and Benefiber because your body needs variety when it comes to fibers, and if you need to fulfill your needs, variety will also help achieve it with a smaller amount.
