If you’re a food lover you have probably heard about Braunschweiger and Liverwurst and if actually know anything about them, you know that they are basically both translated into “liver sausages”. But they do have different names, why is that?
The truth is, they actually have differences between them and a true food lover must certainly know all about them. Especially, the food lover who likes to eat liver. The truth is they are pretty similar in a lot of ways. They are traditional liver sausages and being traditional, they do not have any set recipe, everyone does them differently. Similarly, there is no set recipe for a makeshift lunch such as spaghetti with tuna.
Origin
Both of these liver sausages are made from pork livers and most of the time, both have spices to give them additional flavor. If well done, they are spreadable at room temperature, pretty much like a pate. The first comes in with braunshweiger, as it is generally smoked, and liverwurst generally isn’t. What is done with liverwurst, however, is that bacon is added to grant it a little bit off a smoky flavor.
Braunschweiger also has a difference from its origin, and that’s why it has a different name. Braunschweiger has acquired its name from a town located in Germany called Braunschweig, where liver sausages are smoked, granting them the different from liverwurst, which is the term that describes liver sausages, in general.
That is what it basically boils down to. Braunschweiger is a type of liver sausage (liverwurst) that is generally smoked and acquired its name from the German town of Braunschweig. As there is no set recipe for each one of them, however, they can easily be mistaken. That being said, manufacturers probably use different term to indicate the difference in origin – determining how different the flavors can be.
Nutritional Value
Neither of these are exactly healthy food, you couldn’t really include them in your diet and expect a good healthy body as a result, but they are however a lot better than a lot of things people eat nowadays. Including them in your diet is an excellent option, since both of these tasty liver sausages are amazing sources of vitamins A and B. Nevertheless, you really can’t abuse them since they will raise your cholesterol way higher than what it should be.
Remember that these are liver sausages and just by the term sausages, you should know you can not use them too much in your diet. Both of these have over 300 calories per 100 grams (over 10% of your daily recommended dosage), with Braunschweiger having a little bit more than liverwurst. Having a balanced diet is the key, and these items should be in it.
