15 Enlightening Facts About Caregivers And Why We Should Appreciate Them More

As Americans gradually approach the retirement age in larger strides than ever before, more caregivers will be necessary to take care of our loved ones. The importance of those caregivers requires much dedication and demanding work to do their jobs well. The duties of a caregiver involve more than simply making their clients comfortable. They are a friend, as well as responsible for the overall health and well-being of our family members. Without them providing a reminder for what medications to take, or providing for this service themselves, the clients would be at a great loss.

Qualifications of Caregivers

While a plurality of caregivers have some college or technical training, over a fourth have only a high school diploma or less. The primary caregivers in our communities are typically between the ages of 30 and 64, a wide range that covers multiple generations. Over half of caregivers in 2009 were unpaid, with only 34% receiving compensation for their work.

Women who more likely to be full-time caregivers than men, with a large amount being family caregivers. These caregivers dedicated an average of 20 hours per week to their loved ones, providing largely for their mothers, with a slightly lower number caring for their fathers or spouses. Family caregivers in the United States alone account for 29% of the total population, or 65 million people.

Effects of Being a Caregiver

The effects of being a caregiver take a heavy toll on a person. It may be difficult to stand by and see their beloved slowly wasting away. Not everyone is cut out for the job. Primary caregivers must stay calm in front of their loved one, but the health of a caregiver is often reportedly declined by taking on this role. Stress in the home seems to be high, and work and financial burdens are difficult for caregivers.

Caregiving can’t be measured objectively, not by time, and not by monetary worth. Being with that person is an out of control experience, which may change your perspective on life. The mindset necessary to be a caregiver, and the actual act of caregiving, reminds them that the outside world operates on a whole different level. Often times caregivers feel underappreciated, not only by the one they are caring for, but by other family members as well.

Personal Satisfaction Level of a Caregiver

While just over half of primary caregivers say they feel appreciated, and a majority have a stronger sense of connection to the person they are caring for, it is important to remember that caregivers need some love as well. Avoid hurtful comments, and instead provide some support for any caregivers in your life. Help them take care of themselves, while they take care of some of the most important people in our lives.
