Meaning of Twirling Hair Body Language

We speak volumes without ever saying a word using our body language. Some people are naturally intuitive and can pick up on body language. Twirling the hair by women can be sending a bevy of signals.

Hair feels good between your fingers which can be one of the reasons women twirl their hair but it goes a little deeper than that. If you take a look around you, normally you do not see a woman twirling her hair at work but you will see it as she sits and reads on a park bench.

This is because hair twirling is actually a very relaxing activity. It is a mindless activity that becomes a habit of sorts. It is usually not a “bad” habit but it is more of a self-soothing habit like thumb sucking but more acceptable.

Some women take things up a notch with their hair twirling and it actually turns into a bad habit called Tricholtillomania. This is the extreme of hair twirling, where the hair is actually knotted around the finger and pulled out.

What It Says To Other People

When someone witnesses someone twirling their hair they can be perceived as being insecure or childlike. In some cases it can be viewed as a sexual interest. For example when out on a date if a woman begins playing with her hair it is largely taken that she is interested in her date noticing her.

Hair has historically been considered the “crowning glory” of a woman and throughout history has been something that is viewed as being an attractant to men so when a woman starts twirling away during a date it is a subconscious ancient act of seduction.

Is It a Habit to Break

Your body language is a very important feature of how people perceive you and while hair twirling can be a very relaxing activity it may send signals you are not interested in sending. Paying attention to when and where you do your twirling can help you to only twirl when appropriate.

If it is comforting to you and helps you to relax than don’t even worry about it but do keep in mind that people may pick up on your twirling and think that it means something else.

If you’re twirling has escalated to the point of pulling out hair you may want to speak to a professional about it.
